I just read that Canada has now imposed a new law where all Ticos are now required to get a visa to visit that country.

They say they have thousands of Costa Ricans seeking asylum when they land in Canada or are living there illegaly.

Are things that bad here?

Can't wait to hear American comments, lol.

That plus the scums from our own land that go there and claim to be escaping from a place where they are opressed with zero liberties etc etc and then apply for refugee status

It was obvious that Canada had to do something about it, too bad for the ones that travel the normal way (tourism, business etc) because now its one more paper to get before we can travel

Its all bs of course, in the last 4 years 4287 idiots requested asylum and obviously 99% were declined

I have to say that I was surprised to find out that we Costa Ricans didn't need a visa........it was obvious a whole bunch would travel there and then try to cross into the US

Good thing that the plane ticket to Europe is much more expensive otherwise the European Community would end up having to do the same as Canada did

urghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I don't have much to say about it except that it's just people in pursuit of a better life. Many Ticos are finding it very difficult to scratch out a living in CR right now. There's a lot of poverty down there, and the gap is huge between the have and have-nots, with not much in the middle.

I think Costa Rica should do the same and require a VISA to every contry, there are way too many Nicas, Cubas, Colombias, Chinese, Venezuelans and Americans here...

Yes, start requiring visas to visit Costa Rica. You really have something special down there with that city and all the hookers.

I think Visas for Nicas and Colombians should be required.

If I am not mistaken, Colombians do need Visas to visit CR.

The only way anybody could be fleeing from here would be if they were a fugative from justice or fleeing poverty.
Applying for political asylum pretty much sounds like a scam. There's no political oppression here and if anything one enjoys more personal freedoms here than in the States.

States might argue that personal freedom statement that women are free to choose on abortion and gays can marry just to mention a few.

American I was referring mostly to Nicas, Colombias, Chinese, Cubans and Venezuelans...there are more of them here than ticos...Americans and Europeans are not as many but we need to do something to stop this sexual tourism that you guys have brought along. There’s more to see here than Del Rey...where I bet you spent most of the time

truthteller,

It's something I've thought to be true for a long time. My brother and sister in law were just recently down visiting from Texas where they live and confirmed the same sentiment.

As far as abortion, you are right it's illegal but it's not really an issue because the average tico/tica looks at it as an inconceivable act. On several occasions I've seen shocked or horrified reactions upon learning that abortion is legal in the States let alone common. In short ticas don't see it as a personal freedom because they can't imagine ever doing such a thing.

As far as gays while again you're right they can't marry here Costa Rica has been a hot spot for gay tourism for years because it's know as being a particularily tolerant country as far as homosexuality.

Of course this is an exageration but in C.R. it's kinda like, as long as you don't want to kill, rape, abuse children sexually or otherwise, or drive when falling down drunk you can pretty much do what ever you want.

The sexual tourism is one of the main reasons people chose to vacation in CR. Go to the beach and get laid. Take out the get laid part, you'll definately have less visitors landing in that beautiful city of San Jose.

As far as too many Americans, there are fewer numbers since the Brothers debacle. BTW, you better hope some Americans stay Tarheel. Don't let that sportsbook job go to your head. There's a lot of people out there that are younger and smarter than you. If it wasn't for the Americans giving you a job in the sportsbook industry in CR, you'd be selling your ass to eat just like everyone else down there

Good Point! They were having a hell of a good time down in Cuba before Castro ended the party for everyone. All good things come to an end, it seems.

"If it wasn't for the Americans giving you a job in the sportsbook industry in CR"

The outsourcing industry is taking more and more jobs from the States and putting them in cheaper to operate countries such as India/Philiphinnes/Costa Rica etc

Poor IT guys in the States are having real issues finding a job in their area of expertise when all that is available is jobs at Walmart/Taco Bell
